Opera, a global web pioneer, has introduced MiniPay, a revolutionary blockchain-based wallet integrated into the Opera Mini browser, built on the Celo blockchain. This innovation aims to simplify and make affordable stablecoin transactions across Africa using mobile phone numbers, setting a new standard for consumer-grade wallets.
According to the press release, Opera collaborated with the Blockchain Foundation to create MiniPay, offering rapid, sub-cent fee wallet-to-wallet stablecoin transfers. MiniPay stands out by providing an easy onboarding process via Google credentials, making Web3 transactions accessible even to crypto newcomers.
The wallet’s automatic backup to Google Drive ensures users can recover their assets if needed. Speed, reliability, and financial inclusivity are at the core of MiniPay, making it indispensable for Africans.
MiniPay integrates seamlessly with local payment methods like Airtime, MPesa, Bank Transfer, and Cards through Opera’s local partners, providing users with easy access to their local currency. It also supports Celo’s FiatConnect standard, improving the Cash-In-Cash-Out experience globally.
Opera’s partnership with the Blockchain Foundation aligns with their shared vision of financial inclusion. With over 100 million users in Africa, Opera’s integration of MiniPay into the Opera Mini browser promises fast and transparent transactions on the blockchain, introducing users to its dApps and projects.
Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera, emphasized MiniPay’s importance in addressing concerns about high fees, unreliable services, and limited transparency in financial transactions in African regions like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa.
Celo’s Innovative Features at the Core
Built on the blockchain network, MiniPay capitalizes on features like sub-cent transaction fees, rapid transaction speeds, and access to Celo’s extensive dApp ecosystem, driven by protocols like SocialConnect and FiatConnect.
Rene Reinsberg, Celo Co-Founder and Celo Foundation President expressed excitement about Opera’s role in realizing Celo’s mission at scale, offering users a seamless experience and introducing them to dApps that bring meaningful benefits.
By integrating the non-custodial MiniPay wallet directly into the popular Opera Mini browser, new and existing users will access a truly seamless experience with fast, transparent transactions on the Celo blockchain and be introduced to dApps and projects built on Celo that provide meaningful benefits for people in their everyday lives––this is the ‘killer’ use case the Web3 industry has been waiting for.
Looking ahead, MiniPay will undergo technical upgrades to enhance security and scalability, maintaining low gas fees. It paves the way for more Ethereum-compatible dApps, transforming on-chain finance for community advancement across Africa.
MiniPay is set to launch for Opera Mini users in Nigeria and expand further across the continent, ushering in a new era of financial empowerment.
