As per the latest report, in a candid address at the Korea Blockchain Week, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the urgent need to tackle node centralization, a pressing issue that has been haunting the Ether network.
Buterin issued a warning regarding the current dependence of most Ethereum nodes on centralized services, specifically Amazon Web Services (AWS). This heavy reliance could potentially expose the blockchain to a single point of failure.
Buterin’s remarks underscored the gravity of the situation. “One of those six things is making it technically easier for people to run nodes, and statelessness is one of the really important technologies in doing that right,” he explained.

The statelessness concept aims to reduce reliance on centralized service providers for network activity verification. According to the Ethereum Foundation, achieving true decentralization necessitates the ability for node operators to run Ether on affordable and modest hardware.
Statelessness: A Key To Ethereum’s Future
Statelessness, Buterin stated, is a central component of the network roadmap, with significant progress made in the “The Verge” and “The Purge” stages. The ultimate goal is to enable fully verified Ethereum nodes that can run on mobile devices.
Despite these ambitious goals, Buterin admitted that addressing these highly technical issues might take a decade or even two. “These technical problems will have to be addressed eventually — maybe a 10-year timescale, maybe a 20-year timescale,” he said.
Buterin highlighted several critical steps to reduce Ether centralization beyond statelessness. These steps include improving documentation, lowering barriers to distributed staking, enhancing staking security, and making staking more user-friendly. However, he emphasized that achieving higher scalability remains the most immediate concern for Ethereum’s future.
Currently, Ether’s scaling protocols heavily depend on zero-knowledge (ZK) rollups. These rollups have been praised by the Ethereum community for their potential to improve the throughput of the main ETH chain. ZK-rollups achieve this by offloading computation and state storage off-chain, effectively addressing scalability concerns.
Buterin’s speech shed light on the multifaceted challenges Ethereum faces, particularly the long road ahead in decentralizing node operation. However, Ether’s success hinges on its ability to navigate these challenges and ensure a more decentralized and secure future.
