The Cardano (ADA) community is excitedly buzzing as the pioneering L2 Hydra solution launches on the mainnet. However, discussions are now taking place about Hydra’s actual bandwidth and tech performance specifications.
Recently, a seasoned developer shared his views on the narratives surrounding the release of this major solution. The discussion started from a tweet by Marco Meerman, a soo called tech enthusiast and CardanoCommunity builder between developers and SPOs.
Meerman claimed that Hydra is a layer-2 scaling solution that can process up to 1 million transactions per second, making Cardano one of the fastest and most efficient blockchains in the market.
Technical Director At Cardano, Calls Out Misleading “1 million TPS” Narrative
KtorZ, Technical Director at Cardano, was quick to respond, saying that the narrative of “1 million TPS” is misleading and needs to stop. He suggested that anyone who needs more information about what Hydra is and what it can do should check the links given in the tweet.
The discussion continued, with some questioning whether the industry has ever defined what a transaction consists of. KtorZ replied that the best definition, for now, is “a transfer of native assets from an actor to another,” such as a user sending some ADA or BTC to another user.
However, he acknowledged that this definition is reductive, but it serves as a means of comparison. Meerman admitted that he was wrong and thanked KtorZ for setting him straight.
KtorZ clarified that Hydra is a beautiful engineering solution but not a magic wand, as it cannot improve Cardano’s L1 TPS by definition.
Some members of the community raised concerns about the need for multiple L1 transactions to open a channel and questioned whether this would hinder Hydra’s ability to improve TPS.
KtorZ explained that Hydra is a layer 2 solution that offers an alternative networking solution for executing full-blown transactions at a fast pace and lower cost, with ways to settle an outcome on L1.
Nevertheless, while the Cardano community is thrilled about the launch of Hydra, discussions around its performance specifications and capabilities continue.
It is essential to have a clear understanding of what Hydra is and what it can do to avoid misleading narratives and promote informed discussions.
