Solana stands at a turning point when it comes to deciding whether to switch from its monolithic blockchain model to a modular one, sparking discussions within the crypto community. DeFi trader Ignas has pointed out this imperiled situation, saying that there is a lack of clarity about Solana’s future story. The question is: will Solana’s shift towards “Network Extensions” or Layer 2 solutions resonate more with the broader community?
The significance of this deliberation lies in how Solana will be positioned in the crypto market. Leaving behind its monolithic model could make SOL’s stance quite similar to that of Ethereum, the first one, and later two ambiguous positions, one being the efficiency of Bitcoin ($BTC) and the other being the innovation of newer, faster chains such as Solana itself.
In the bull run recently, Ethereum ($ETH) found itself squeezed between Bitcoin, called “better money” by conservative and institutional investors, and $SOL, a faster, simpler, and cheaper smart contract platform with a higher potential upside. If Solana copies the modular narrative style of Ethereum’s Layer 2 scaling solution, $SOL could be on the same path as $ ETH.
But, this transition is not without challenges. SOL’s path to modularity through Network Extensions or Layer 2 solutions may cause liquidity fragmentation or a degraded user experience that some users experienced on Ethereum. This way, $SOL would lose its current appeal.
Impact on Solana’s Position in the Crypto Market
Ethereum is decentralized and has a long history of being stable and not downtime, which is why it is a safer long-term asset storage option than Solana. Moreover, if the narrative shifts towards chasing tokens for speculative gains instead of holding $SOL itself, then it may experience price stagnation which is similar to what $ETH went through with the “beta chasing” trend this cycle.
Solana’s new narrative can be successful only if these Network Extensions are executed and received well. If Solana can bypass liquidity fragmentation and user experience degradation, it might keep its monolithic attractiveness and, moreover, gain the advantages of a modular approach.
Such measures would call for careful management and convincing information from SOL’s team to make clear the difference between Network Extensions and traditional Layer 2 solutions in the minds of investors.
Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding SOL presents a chance for other blockchains to grab the single crown. There may be a fresh opportunity for projects like Monad or a different Layer 1 blockchain to emerge as the next major player in this domain.
