Sam Altman, co-founder of artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, is set to reclaim the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) nearly a week after being ousted from the company’s board. The move has triggered a backlash from both employees and key stakeholders.
OpenAI Reboot: Altman Returns, Bringing Stability
Announcing the development, OpenAI stated in an X post on Wednesday morning, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.” Altman expressed his anticipation for his return, stating in a post, “I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
Altman’s departure last weekend was marked by ambiguity. The company cited his lack of consistent openness in communications with the board as the reason for his removal. A leaked memo, however, did not provide specific details on the circumstances leading to Altman’s exit.
OpenAI emphasized that the decision “was not made in response to malfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security/privacy practices.”
The void left by Altman at OpenAI quickly became an opportunity for another tech giant. Reports surfaced earlier this week indicating that Altman, along with Greg Brockman, the co-founder and president of OpenAI, and other former staff members, would join Microsoft, a key investor in the AI startup.
Sources suggest that major investors in the company, led by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, played a pivotal role in pushing for Altman’s reinstatement as CEO and a revamp of the current board. The unexpected firing led to intense negotiations, culminating in Altman’s return and the appointment of a new board.
Altman’s departure had not only raised eyebrows within the company but also sparked criticism from hundreds of the company employees. A note to the board threatened a mass exodus of staff to join Altman unless the board formally resigned.
As the company navigates this leadership transition, industry observers are keenly watching how Altman’s return will shape the future trajectory of the AI startup and its collaborations, particularly with Microsoft.
